Day 2: Ely, Nevada to Grand Junction, Colorado

On the road early, about 7:30. Gassed up at $3.85 a gallon, washed the windows and we were off. A right hand turn and headed east on Hwy 50 once again.
I'm writing this on Sunday night. Just haven't been very good at keeping current I suppose. Oh well I'll try to do better, maybe. Have to upload pictures and think about this leg. Will get back to it at some point. Amazed to have had comments about Grand Junction though, didn't realize anyone knew it existed. Am told that its the largest city west of the continual divide, who knew. This is about the road between Ely and Grand Junction however, which will have to wait a bit.

Day 1 & 2

On the road Day 1 San Jose to Ely, Nevada

Rest stop at Blue Canyon
First Gas
Unscheduled stop

First day on the road. It was a lot of desert and heat. At our first gas stop the thermometer read 105°.  When through some interesting country. Lots of unique towns along the way: Fernley, Fallen, Austin and Eureka. Was really saddened to see how depleted many of the small towns where that we drove through were. So much of small and middle America seems to be boarded up. It was just to hot to get out and explore much and the drive was a long one. Had a good stop and meal in Fallen at Stockman's steakhouse and casino. Thank goodness for McDonalds, clean bathrooms and great tea according to Angie.
Once we left the Reno area and turned onto Hwy 50 and headed east, the road narrows and the turrain turns to shrub and dry. Maybe that's why they call it a desert. Just a lot of long straight road heading east.
Our first stop is in Ely, NV near the eastern boarder. We rolled in late in the afternoon and found the streets nearly deserted. Admittedly it was 100° but it was Friday Night. I had made reservations at the Jailhouse Motel and Casino; which appeared to be a very campy on the internet. Actually, it was a bit more typical a motel then I expected. Angie didn't through-up at least. Other than a tolit that was 6" high off the floor it wasn't tooo bad.
There are two casinos in the strip of Ely we were in. The one we stayed at had about 100 slot machines of the penny and nickle variety. Not very glamorous. The other casino across was about the same but was decorated with stuffed moose and elk heads. It even had an antler chandler, Angie would have loved it as an addition to our rustic decor at the new house.
Note the amount of public art on the walls and storefronts.
